Campaigners fighting to save Ashton pools have won victory.
Tameside Council chiefs have voted to keep open the pools – and are now investigating a major programme of refurbishment for the Active Ashton facility.
The move is a victory for ‘people power’ after a spirited campaign by local people, which was backed by Angela Rayner, MP.
She said:”This is a great result for all the people who came together to save Ashton pools.
“It shows what can be achieved when people come together and make their voices heard, loud and clear.
“The pools are extremely popular and well-used locally, especially by people and their families living in St Peter’s ward which is one of the most deprived in the borough.
“Now, after this positive decision, we will be looking to see further investment and modernisation to make the pools even better.”
Angela had met with Tameside Council leader Kieran Quinn to make the case for the pools to remain open.
