Angela Rayner MP is battling to end discrimination in the workplace against mums- to-be.
She is supporting a call by the charity Maternity Action which has highlighted new Government research which has found that 54,000 women lose their jobs each year because of pregnancy discrimination.
Another 100,000 women experience harassment or negative comments and 53,000 are discouraged from attending antenatal appointments.
Angela said: “these figures are horrifying in this day and age. Every pregnant woman and new mother is entitled to a safe and secure working environment. It is very disappointing and alarming that so many expectant women are encountering serious problems at work.
“I strongly support tough action on pregnancy discrimination. Women have a right to demand equal treatment all the time, but there is absolutely no excuse when they are expecting.
“They should be supported to assert their rights and have effective protection against dinosaur employers who ignore their legal obligations.”
The research, Pregnancy and Maternity-Related Discrimination and Disadvantage. was jointly commissioned by the Equality and Human Rights Commission and the Department of Business Innovation and Skills. It was released in March 2016.
Maternity Action campaigns for an end to pregnancy and maternity discrimination. It provides telephone advice to 2,500 parents each year through its Advice Line: 0845 600 85 33 and parents download over 50,000 information sheets from its website each month See www.maternityaction.org.uk.
