LOCAL MPs Angela Rayner (Ashton-under-Lyne) and Jonathan Reynolds (Stalybridge and Hyde) have today launched a campaign to save the Royal Mail Delivery Office in Ashton from closure.

They believe closure will result in a worse service for local people, who will be forced to travel up to 12 miles to Oldham for their post.

The MPs are now demanding a face-to-face meeting with Royal Mail bosses to force them to ditch the plan.

The campaign is being backed by Tameside Council and the Communications Workers Union whose 84 members of staff would be forced to move to Oldham.

Plans are already underway for a public petition, street stalls and a demonstration of support outside the closure threatened office in Fleet Street.

Angela Rayner MP said: “Closure would mean a much worse service for local people who would be forced to travel even further to collect or post their mail. ”

Jonathan Reynolds added: “We are going to fight this all the way.”
