The Right Honourable Angela Rayner MP Representing Ashton-under-Lyne (including Audenshaw, Droylsden and Dukinfield)

Angela was honoured to be invited to Canon Burrows C of E Primary to see the work pupils have been doing to prepare for Holocaust Memorial Day 2025.
The theme for HMD 2025 is ‘For a Better Future’ and the school are taking part in the national 80 candles for 80 years project to mark the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau.
The project will see 80 communities from across the UK design and create candleholders inspired by the life stories of those who were persecuted or murdered by the Nazis. The candleholders will be showcased in a digital exhibition at the UK national HMD ceremony and this will be followed by a traveling physical exhibition across the country.

Children at Canon Burrows are taking inspiration from the life story of Renee Bornstein BEM who survived the Holocaust and now lives in Manchester.
Angela said: “Their attention to detail and passion for the project was clear to see in the artwork they have produced and it was wonderful to chat to the pupils and hear how moved and inspired they have been by Renee’s story.”

Angela’s next stop was Ravensfield Primary in Dukinfield to see the work the children have been doing for UK Parliament Week.
She said: “The school council had some excellent questions for me and they all told me what they would do if they could be Prime Minister for the day. There were some brilliant ideas and it was wonderful to see how interested and engaged they all were.”
