Angela discussed road safety concerns with pupils on a visit to St Stephen’s CE Primary School in Ashton.
Members of the school council invited Angela to the Audenshaw Road site to share their thoughts on how to reduce the speed of traffic and make the area safer for pedestrians and cyclists.
In a letter to their MP ahead of the visit, children said they were concerned as staff members, parents and local residents have been injured by cars undertaking to beat the traffic lights, sometimes mounting the kerb.
They also told Angela about hearing lots of car horns and drivers using swear words due to road rage.
Angela listened to their thoughts about the challenges posed by heavy and speeding traffic outside the school gates and shared her ongoing commitment to working with the council and police to explore solutions that will help keep children and families safe.
She said: “It was fantastic to visit St Stephen’s and spend time with such brilliant pupils and dedicated staff. I know how important it is for parents to feel confident that their children are safe getting to and from school, so it was really valuable to hear first-hand about the road safety concerns in the area.
“I’m committed to working with the school and local partners to look at what more can be done to improve safety outside the gates.”
Headteacher Guy Lovgreen added: “We were delighted to welcome Angela to St Stephen’s. It was great for our pupils to share their ideas and experiences directly. We’re grateful for her support on the important issue of road safety.”
As part of the visit, Angela also officially opened “The Nest” – the school’s new outdoor learning hub. The space has been designed to provide pupils with greater opportunities to learn in nature, supporting both their wellbeing and educational development.
Angela said: “It was a real privilege to officially open The Nest. Spaces like this make such a difference – giving children the chance to learn in a different environment, build confidence and enjoy their surroundings. It’s a wonderful addition to the school and I look forward to seeing the children enjoy it for years to come.”
